Theoretical Orientation and Treatment Modalities

Existential Therapy

A form of psychotherapy based on the model of human nature and experience. This approach focuses on concepts that are universally applicable to the human experience including death, freedom, responsibility, and the meaning of life. Philosophical issues of the self, personality, philosophy of mind, meaning of life, personal development, and attachment will be explored as you learn to embrace free-will and the power of choice in order to gain control over your life.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

A skill-based approach to psychotherapy that focuses on the development and application of specific skills that can help people to build a more satisfying life. The classic DBT-skill modules are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, however additional modules have been added to include dialectics (finding the balance of black/white thinking patterns), problem-solving, building a satisfying life, boundaries, and shifting thoughts.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

A solution-oriented approach to psychotherapy that helps individuals to improve problems by gaining more awareness of their cognitions or thought patterns (unhelpful ways of thinking), and behaviors (unhelpful or learned behaviors) in order to learn better ways of coping with problems and allowing room for change. CBT places significant emphasis on developing strategies to change thinking patterns and behavioral patterns to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

Motivational Interviewing

A directive, client-centered approach to  psychotherapy that focuses on helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence in order to achieve change. The basis of MI is the idea that every single person may be in differing stages of readiness levels and may need to act accordingly to their readiness to change and current needs.

Parenting Support

A combination of parent education and supportive counseling aimed to help parents improve relationships with their children, reduce parental conflict, and improve communication skills and conflict resolution skills. Therapy may focus on developing a detailed plan for issues such as discipline, decision making, communication, and/or creating a more supportive and relaxing home environment.

Substance Abuse & Addiction

Ongoing support is essential for individuals in addiction recovery, and for families with loved ones suffering from addiction. Therapy will use a variety of approaches and focus on lifestyle, behaviors, relationships, boundaries, stages of change, and relapse prevention.

I work with adolescents (age 14+), young adults, and adults on an individual basis. During an individual’s course of treatment, family members or significant others may be brought into sessions as needed, however I do not currently offer family counseling and marriage counseling services. I utilize evidenced based models, cognitive behavioral and behavioral therapies, as well as psycho-dynamic and humanistic models. I use strengths-based models, and motivational interventions and techniques. The type(s) of therapy is tailored to each client’s unique needs, goals, and strengths. I serve all individuals, adolescents, and adults regardless of race, ethnicity, ability level, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
